  • Diesel Fuel Pumps:
    Diesel fuel pumps are designed to inject a specific amount of fuel at a very specific time. They control the injectors by the pressure waves of the fuel that they pump. They are usually linked to the crankshaft or the camshaft through a series of gears. These gears allow the fuel pump to be driven directly by the crankshaft of the engine. However, some are belt driven and some are chain driven. The diesel fuel pump has mechanisms in it which allows more or less fuel to be pumped. If less fuel is pumped into the cylinders, this slows the engine. Pumping more fuel increases the speed of the engine. Consequently, the fuel pump regulates the speed of the diesel engine.

    When an engine runs eratic or becomes hard to start. The fuel pump is first suspect. This may be true but often the problem is not the pump but the supply system.

Crude dipped below $115 a barrel as traders continued to ponder Wednesday's U.S. Energy Department report on weekly fuel inventories. The department's Energy Information Administration reported a bigger-than-expected drop in gasoline supplies but also said U.S. demand for refined fuel products continues to fall as American grapple with amost $4-a-gallon gasoline. The data seemed to confirm oil market analysts' beliefs that Americans are still cutting back on their driving despite slightly lower pump prices. Light, sweet crude for September delivery fell $1.25 to $114.75 on the New York Mercantile Exchange after alternative between positive and negative territory for most of the morning. Some pullback was expected as traders sought to cash in on Wednesday's rally, which temporarily halted a monthlong slide that took crude $35 below its July 11 high of $147.27.
